What is Brainspotting therapy?

Brainspotting is a somatic therapy technique originally crafted and published by Dr. David Grand as an offshoot of EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). The primary focus is on sensory feelings and being supported through those feelings rather than on decoding, discussing, learning, or other higher level processing.

Most commonly the therapist holds up their hand, pointer, or other object that the recipient focuses on while ‘brain spots’ are discovered and explored. Biolateral music may be included as desired. This can be done once within a single session as a supplement to other modalities or can be used repeatedly and even become the primary therapy method. Unlike EMDR, Brainspotting is not a manualized approach but rather an invitational process of organic discovery.
